“The bald spot is gone. My hairdresser can’t see it anymore.” – Mirjam
Mirjam is 62 and works part-time in psychiatric nursing. During menopause, she experienced a range of symptoms. Around the same time, her hair also started becoming noticeably thinner. The amount of hair she was losing in the shower and a bald patch on the crown of her head made her feel particularly self-conscious.
Her doctor told her about minoxidil, and she has now been using Minoxidil 2% for around six or seven years. The difference? The bald patch her hairdresser once noticed is no longer visible.
Mirjam used to have much thicker hair. Around 2015, she began to notice that it was changing. Her hair gradually became thinner, and she was losing a noticeable amount of hair in the shower. “The hairs would just run down my legs. I found that really upsetting.”
Mirjam suspects that her hair loss was linked to menopause. During those years, she experienced a lot of menopausal symptoms and noticed at the same time that the condition of her hair was getting worse.
The moment her hair loss became truly visible was at the hairdresser’s. “My hairdresser pointed out a bald patch on the crown of my head and told me I should see my doctor about it.”
Worried that it would keep getting worse
The hair loss had a big impact on Mirjam. It shocked her, and she was afraid that her hair would continue to become thinner. “I felt really awful about it. It was very upsetting.”
Like many people, Mirjam searched online for information. But instead of reassuring her, some of what she read only made her more anxious. So she felt relieved when her doctor told her there was a treatment she could try.
“When the doctor said I could use minoxidil, I wanted to try it straight away.”
Mirjam received different advice about the strength she should use: her doctor mentioned 5%, while the pharmacist recommended 2%. In the end, she chose Minoxidil 2%.
Version recommended for women.
This medicine has been approved for the treatment of hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) after long-term research.
Despite the lower concentration, research shows that 2% Minoxidil is effective with consistent daily use.
Being patient while waiting for the first new hairs
Mirjam started using minoxidil around 2019. Although she was hopeful, she remained realistic about what she could expect. “Of course you hope it will work, but I was also quite critical. My hair hasn’t grown back as thick as it used to be.”
The results did not appear overnight either. It took around a year before Mirjam clearly noticed new hairs growing. “It happens very gradually. The new hairs don’t grow particularly long in my case, but they are there again.”
And that difference means a lot to her. Where there used to be a visible bald patch on the crown of her head, her hairdresser can no longer see one. “The bald patch is gone. My hairdresser can’t see it anymore!”
Other people would not immediately realise that Mirjam has dealt with hair loss either. “I still get compliments on my hair.”
Minoxidil as part of her daily routine
After so many years, minoxidil has become a fixed part of Mirjam’s daily routine. She applies the lotion twice a day: in the morning at around seven o’clock and in the evening after dinner.
Each time, she uses around nine to ten sprays, distributing them over the areas where her hair is thinner: the crown of her head, the area that used to be bald and the front around her parting. “It is quite a commitment, because you have to take it into account every day. Even when it comes to when you wash your hair.”
Still, she finds it manageable overall. Because she is so pleased with how her hair looks now, she is reluctant to stop using it. “The more I read about it, the more worried I am that the hair loss will come back if I stop.”
She did notice that her skin became a little drier while using it. She also found the first bottle she received from the pharmacy less convenient because it did not come with a spray applicator. Later, she ordered minoxidil from Hairgivers. “I find it much easier to apply with the spray.”
Hair fibres for a little extra volume
Through Hairgivers, Mirjam later discovered Kmax hair fibres as well. She tried them after receiving a gift voucher and was pleasantly surprised.
She uses dark grey hair fibres mainly to make her parting less visible and to give her hair a fuller appearance. “It gives it just that little bit more volume and makes my hair look thicker.”
She does not use the hair fibres every day, but every few days. “They stay in place really well between washes.”
She also liked the fact that a gift voucher led her to discover a new product. “Something like that encourages you to have another look around the website and try something new.”
Hair fibers consist of keratin that binds to thinning, fine hairs via static electricity.
In an instant, hair appears thicker and thinner areas on the scalp are camouflaged.
The effect of hair fibers is natural and invisible to other people around you.
If Mirjam could give one piece of advice to someone considering minoxidil, it would be this: do not expect immediate results.
“You have to try it and see for yourself. But be patient, because it takes time.”
At one point, she also tried another hair growth product, but in the end she decided to go back to minoxidil. For her, it works best with the routine she has followed for years. “I find it easy enough to keep up. You just have to be consistent and give it time.”
“The service is really good”
Mirjam has also had positive experiences with Hairgivers. By now, she has placed several orders. She appreciates the easy ordering process and fast shipping, but what stands out most to her is the customer service.
“There were a few times when something didn’t go completely right, but it was always sorted out properly. The service is really good.”
After years of feeling very self-conscious about her hair loss, Mirjam now feels much more positive about her hair. It may not be as full as it used to be, but the bald patch that started it all has disappeared, and she still has a lovely head of hair.

Summary During menopause, Mirjam noticed that her hair was becoming increasingly thin and eventually developed a visible bald spot on the crown of her head. On her doctor’s advice, she started using Minoxidil 2%, which she has now been using for around six to seven years. It took about a year before she clearly noticed new hair growth, but the bald spot is no longer visible. Minoxidil has since become a fixed part of her daily routine, and she applies it twice a day. She also occasionally uses Kmax hair fibres to make her parting less visible and give her hair a fuller appearance. Her main advice to others is to be patient and consistent, as results take time.
